Middle Schoolers Remove Air Conditioner From the Beach

The Green Team's latest project gives new meaning to the phrase "cooler by the lake."

It's hard to say why someone felt it was OK to dump their old air conditioner on the bluff of Big Bay Park.

But thanks to Whitefish Bay Middle School's Green Team, the window unit has been removed – just in time for summer beach season.

Jeff Treul, the group's advisor, said the Green Team first discovered the air conditioner during the Green Day in the Bay village cleanup effort on May 4. They didn't have the tools to remove the air conditioner at that time, but they kept it in mind as a future project.

Treul said it took quite a bit of elbow grease to get the air conditioner off the bluff last week. They finished the job on Tuesday by hauling it out of the park with a dollie.

The students who participated in the air conditioner excavation were Thomas Mueller, Rowan Koch and Rhys Koch. Staff members Patti Lynch and Craig Ulezelski also lent their efforts to the project.

Middle school students do not have to sign up for the Green Team; they can show up to help with any project at any time.
