Gardening Camps Offer Youth a Chance to Grow All Summer Long

My Summer Vacation Spent Gardening:

Research has continuously proven children’s exposure and interaction with gardening increases their willingness to consume fruits and vegetables.[1]  Locally, Cedarburg, Grafton and Port Washington School Districts, amongst others, believe in this idea and have begun incorporating school gardens, farm visits, and monthly fresh, produce tastings in cafeterias for students. 

As the summer months arrive, youth interaction with gardening has the opportunity to blossom.  The greater Milwaukee area is a hub of gardening and local food activity, and many organizations provide summer gardening programs for youth.

Greater Milwaukee Area Gardening Camp Picks: 

• Gardening Fridays! at Schlitz Autobon Nature Center (Milwaukee) – “Come dig, plant and water in our gardens. Garden stories, projects and enjoying tasty, fresh garden vegetables and herbs are all apart of the gardening fun”. Ages 4-5. • Gardening Summer Camps at Wellspring Organic Farm and Education Center (Newburg/ West Bend) – “Youth learn practical gardening skills while experiencing how plants grow and connecting with where their food comes from. Learn about insects, vegetables, flowers, soil and worms while playing games, making art, reading stories and singing songs! “Ages 6-11. Dates throughout the summer.
