Week in Review: May 29 to June 4

In case you missed it, here are some of the top headlines from Whitefish Bay Patch this week.

Something smells a little fishy at Sturgeon Interiors, where the store's signature fiberglass sturgeon has been stolen.

Owner Betsy Hoke said she noticed the 7-foot-long, purple and white sturgeon missing from the outside lawn last week, and employees believe it was taken sometime between May 20 and 23.

Four more unlocked cars were entered last week in three separate incidents, making a total of 32 .

In other police news, a 23-year-old California man was “highly intoxicated” when he was found laying down on the grass, and a 22-year-old man from the Eagle River area was arrested for his first drunken driving offense.

Whitefish Bay track athletes had an impressive showing at the WIAA State Track Meet in La Crosse this weekend. Dominican High School junior Deysha Smith-Jenkins defended her title in the 200 and knocked off defending state champ Eileen Gehring (Madison Edgewood) in the 100 to take her second gold of the day. Dominican placed fifth in division 2 finals, and Bay boys took seventh in the division 1 competition.

The state Government Accountability Board Tuesday certified that the signatures gathered in the Sen. Alberta Darling effort are valid, a decision that paves the way for a July 12 recall election.

The state board only considered the petition signatures against the three Republican senators Tuesday morning, meaning those elections will meet the June 3 certification deadline for a July 12 election. The legal challenges in the petitions against three Democratic senators will be considered the week of June 6, meaning a later election date will be scheduled in those races.

The municipal lots behind and  are open again after about , and now the crews are digging into the lot behind .

The reconstruction project will remove and replace the existing storm sewer, lighting and pavement in the two parking lots. The reconstruction of the Winkie's lot started Tuesday and is expected to last about four weeks, with a contracted completion date of June 24 for both projects.
