Week in Review: July 2 to July 9

The week in headlines from Whitefish Bay Patch.

The European-style cafe opened its doors with a soft opening Wednesday, serving only coffee drinks and pastry items. A partial menu was introduced over the weekend, and a full menu of food items will be available next week.

State aid to the Whitefish Bay School District will drop $1,082,928, or 10.13 percent, based on estimates released Friday by the state Department of Public Instruction.  The district had expected a $1.3 million reduction in state aid, and an overall $2.1 million shortfall as a result of the revenue limits called for in Gov. High School Jam Band Rocks Summerfest

Not many high school musicians can say they played a gig with one of their idols, but four teenagers in a local jam band did just that Thursday night. Evergreen has played some pretty big gigs during their 10 months of existence — the Miramar Theater, an Admirals game and the Summer Soulstice festival on North Avenue. But Thursday afternoon, they played Milwaukee’s ultimate Big Gig, playing on the same day as one of their idols, funk legend George Clinton.

A young couple were caught in the act in a parked car on Henry Clay Drive and Elkhart Avenue last week. Police also responded to a bicycle crash and another incident of drinking on the beach.
