Week in Review: April 17 to April 23

Darling recall signatures filed, Kloppenburg calls for a recount and more made the Patch pages this week.

In case you missed it, here are some of the top headlines from Whitefish Bay Patch this week.

The organizers of a group working to recall Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) filed nearly 30,000 signatures Thursday, well over the little more than 20,000 the group needed to spark a recall election. The state's Government Accountability Board will have 31 days to review and verify the signatures on the petitions, which would mean that an election could be held in mid-July.

State Supreme Court candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg on Wednesday requested a statewide recount of , saying even if the results didn't change, the scrutiny was required to restore confidence in this and future elections. The state Department of Justice prosecutor also called for a special investigator to be assigned to review Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus and her election processes for any irregularities, misconduct and recommended change in practices.

The husband and wife that were fined $1,500 each for removing a manhole cover during a rainstorm last summer were both ordered to pay one-third of the original citation amount last month.

Michael Payne, 47, and Sally Heiple-Payne, 42, each received a municipal citation for $1,500 from the Whitefish Bay Police Department after they admitted to removing a manhole cover in the early morning hours of Aug. 21. The couple later requested the case be transferred to Brown Deer Municipal Court, where in January Judge David M. Victor ordered the couple to pay $500 each to the court by March 25.

 

Karen Baker Mathu has taken over as the executive director of the Whitefish Bay Business Improvement District.

Mathu is the owner of Bay Ridge Consulting, a public transportation and community planning firm located in the Fox Bay building at 316 E. Silver Spring Drive, and she has served on the BID board since it was formed two years ago.

 

After several unlocked garages were , another four vehicle break-ins and two vehicle thefts were reported this past week.

On Thursday and Friday, vehicles were stolen from in the 5400 block of North Hollywood Avenue and the 2000 block of East Glendale Avenue. Both vehicles were later recovered. During the same time period, three other thefts from vehicles were reported.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, an unknown person smashed the front passenger window of a car in the 4900 block of North Marlborough Drive, stealing a $300 CD player from the vehicle.

 

As runners lined up for the Boston Marathon Monday morning, North Shore firefighter James Gefke likely looked a little different than most, as he finished the run in 4 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds — wearing full firefighting gear.

Even heavier than the gear, was likey the memory of his fallen friend and former North Shore firefighter of more than a decade, on his mind.

Gefke ran to honor his fallen friend and former North Shore firefighter . Gefke raised money for a memorial fund in Gefke's name.
