11 Years Later: Never Forgetting September 11, 2001

Tuesday marks the 11-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

In downtown Milwaukee, Mayor Tom Barrett, Gov. Scott Walker, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn and Gurmal Singh of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin will honor the victims of the attacks with a special ceremony from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. at the Milwaukee War Memorial Center, 715 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr.

Wreaths will be placed in the reflecting pool at the War Memorial’s Fitch Plaza and speakers will remember the lives lost. After the program the public is invited to ring the bell of the USS Milwaukee in memory of the victims.

“Eleven years after the attacks most of us have returned to our daily routines, but we must never forget the first responders and those that were killed,” Abele said in a statement.

Barrett added, “It’s important that we gather to honor those who lost their lives on September 11th and to pay tribute to the members of the armed services who continue to risk their lives to protect us."
