Making Homes More Energy Efficient

A program that helps families lower their energy bills by making their homes more efficient is reporting success.  The Weatherization Program of the Social Development Commission (SDC) has issued a positive report card for it just-completed program year.

The SDC Weatherization Program finished its program year at the end of June and reports they exceeded their contract goal for the period.  It sought to weatherize 678 City of Milwaukee homes at an average cost of $8,500.  For the year, the program was able to complete work on 740 homes (or 9% more than goal number) for an average cost of $7,191.

Weatherization program staff conducts energy audits on eligible homes and then coordinates service work to make them more energy efficient.  Work may include insulation of attics, walls, and floors, furnace tune-ups, repairs or replacements, water heater safety and efficiency, installation of ventilation fans, replacement of energy inefficient refrigerators and freezers, putting in energy saving lighting, and information on maintenance and energy conservation.

The Weatherization Program of SDC has received positive feedback from the families who have received weatherization services during the just completed program year.  One participating homeowner wrote the program to say “…it is a good program. It would be helpful if more homeowners knew about it. Get the word out about such a good job that SDC is doing.”

The Weatherization Program is designed to work with Energy Assistance recipients who are identified by the State as eligible for the program.
