A Big Step on the Road to Success

Hundreds of women and men who overcame many challenges to return to school and earn a diploma were honored by graduation ceremonies at MATC. They included 132 graduates from the Social Development Commission’s (SDC) GED/HSED Program. The commencement ceremony was held by MATC to recognize graduates from GED/HSED programs operated by several dozen Community-Based Organizations. They include SDC, COA, Journey House, UMOS, YWCA, the Adult Learning Center, CYD, Hope House and Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services. One of the graduates participating in the ceremony held at the U.S. Cellular Arena was Theresa Williams, a former employee of SDC who decided she wanted to earn her diploma. She says that going back to school so many years after leaving was very difficult. She noted that with the help of family and friends however, she succeeded in completing the coursework and testing at SDC’s program so she could proudly walk across the stage. She adds that she hopes her success with earning her diploma will provide a positive example for her children and grandchildren. The Social Development Commission provides classroom instruction and testing for GEDs and HSEDs plus it offers the only Competency Based Diploma in Milwaukee County. The agency also plans to soon open a state of the art testing center.
