Who's Hungry? Bay's Eatery Landscape Changing Rapidly

Two restaurants are planned for vacant Silver Spring locations while other types of sustenance — including wings and frozen yogurt — have arrived recently.

The second half of 2012 has seen significant changes to the eatery landscape in Whitefish Bay.

Last week’s announcement of plans for a full-service restaurant and bar called The Bay in the former El Guapo location was met by Patch users with mostly high praise.

“WFB has long needed and deserved just such a destination. Hopefully, it will become a community "go to" spot and will take advantage of what I consider the perfect location!”

“The residents here will pay for higher quality meats and dishes and I do believe health conscious folks will shell out cash as well. We have enough crappy food options at Bayshore.”

Similar excitement — though a bit more skepticism — met the announcement in late November of a wine and tapas bar that will occupy the former Cutters barber shop.

User Marvin Mason commented:

“I find this to be exciting news! I wish them much success and I will do my part to help. The building owner and the village should also do their parts in helping this new business prosper. It takes a village.”

User Absolutelyfabulous had a different take, thinking that the demographics are all wrong:

“I associate a wine & tapas location w/ more of a downtown/singles early evening/happy hour crowd vs the family oriented, everyone sits down for dinner @ 6 pm crowd that dominates WFB and the adjacent suburbs.”

In addition to those major announcement have been other openings and re-openings:

  • Aliota’s Pub and Grill opened in September after being closed for eight months, changing ownership and undergoing wholesale renovations from when it was TJ Aliota’s. The restaurant is near the border of Shorewood and Whitefish Bay.
  • Two frozen yogurt shops opened a few blocks apart on Silver Spring Drive. Sweet Frog came in September and then Cherry Berry followed in November.
  • Finally, on Port Washington Road just south of Silver Spring Drive, a new Wingstop opened last month. The national chain serves, not surprisingly, chicken wings and is offering freebies on Tuesday as part of its grand opening locally.

What's your opinion on the new eating options? Excited? Skeptical? Too much froyo? Tell us in the comments.
