The City Market Nearing an Opening

Cafe co-owner said the inside is finished, and they hope to open their doors in a couple weeks.

The future home of The City Market looks ready to go from the outside, but the cafe is still a couple weeks away from opening, co-owner Jeff Swanson said.

“We’re almost there,” he said Friday afternoon.

If you haven’t been by the corner of Silver Spring Drive and Hollywood Avenue lately, the outside of the building at 527 E. Silver Spring Dr. is painted and the café’s signature logo adorns the large glass windows looking out over the street.

Swanson said the interior brick walls are finished, and all of the equipment and tables are moved into the building. He said they are currently working on hooking up the coffee machines and installing a computer system, a first for The City Market, which has a location at Capitol Drive in Shorewood and two locations in Wauwatosa.

Swanson was hesitant to give an exact completion date, because code compliance issues and other unforeseen obstacles have sprouted up along the way.

“We don’t want to rush into opening,” he said. “It all boils down to having the best opening possible.”

Once everything is set up, he said he hopes to have the health inspector in next week.

In the meantime, Swanson said he is looking forward to the new spot in Whitefish Bay, which will be the largest of their four locations.

“It’s a gorgeous store,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun change for us, that’s for sure.”
