Milwaukee Foodie News: New Restaurant Coming to Tosa; Barbecue Joints Galore

A new tavern planned for Wauwatosa and a recent surge in new barbecue restaurants in the Milwaukee area top this week's foodie news.

Cafe Hollander Owners Plan Second Restaurant in Tosa

The Lowlands Group plans to open a new restaurant next to its existing restaurant, Cafe Hollander, in the Village area of Wauwatosa, according to the Business Journal. The bar and restaurant, called Harmony Tavern, would feature “a limited but unique menu, high-end cocktails, wine and beer,” the Business Journal reported. The establishment also would have an outdoor dining area, as does Cafe Hollander.

Frozen Yogurt Shop Set to Open in Greenfield

If there's a frozen yogurt shop opening in the Milwaukee area, you can trust Patch to let you know about it...and the latest entry in this crowded field is Daddy Yo's, which will be opening in a matter of days near Southridge Mall. Owner John Mosier said the idea for Daddy-Yo’s came from a visit to Yo Mama’s, a similarly named frozen yogurt establishment in Wauwatosa that opened in 2011. Read more on Greenfield Patch.

Barbecue restaurants popping up all over

It's not just self-service frozen yogurt places that have been opening up throughout the Milwaukee area, either. The Journal Sentinel's Carol Deptolla reports that at least five barbecue restaurants have opened in the last six months or so, reflecting a national trend. Among the new barbecue joints: Double B's BBQ in West Allis; Puddle Jumpers Smokehouse BBQ, located on South Howell Avenue, across from the Mitchell International Airport; Big Daddy's Brew & Que at the Bayshore Town Center in Glendale; Atlas BBQ in Grafton; and Ashley's Que on West National Avenue in Milwaukee.

Solly's Burgers Among the Best in the Nation

The butter- and onion-laden hamburgers Solly's Grille in Glendale are being hailed as among the best in the U.S. by Thrilllist.com. The classic burgers at Solly's, a Milwaukee fixture since 1936, are made with 100 percent sirloin, plenty of butter and onions on a special bun. Read more on Whitefish Bay Patch.

Gastropub opens in Walker's Point

Prodigal Gastropub has opened its doors in Walker's Point. Prodigal chef Van Luu told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the restaurant features an eclectic menu and incorporates the taste of other cultures. Among the items on the menu are Pacific halibut with fingerling potatoes; cornbread-stuffed roast chicken with red pepper puree and roasted okra; and a burger with fries, made with the restaurant's house-ground beef blend and topped with Wisconsin cheddar.
