Bacon, Egg and Donut Unite in Dunkin' Donuts' Newest Sandwich

Whitefish Bay's Dunkin' Donuts location is serving a glazed donut breakfast sandwich, which generated some buzz on social media.

Social media websites are buzzing in anticipation of Dunkin' Donuts releasing its newest sandwich: a glazed donut cut in half and filled with a fried egg and two strips of bacon.

With this sandwich, the national donut chain is adding to the surprisingly-extensive and highly-caloric trend of replacing sandwich bread with fatty foods. First, the Luther Burger replaced burger buns with donuts, and then, KFC went and replaced the bun with fried chicken breasts.

Dunkin' Donuts' latest culinary invention will be rolled out nationally on Friday, but the Whitefish Bay store was serving the sandwich for $2.99 when the news release went out on Monday morning.

Dunkin Donut's executive chef, Stan Frankenthaler, said on the company website that he sees a trend toward treats that have the sweetness of a glazed donut and the savoriness of bacon.

"We’ve seen the savory and sweet combination becoming more and more popular," he said. "Our Waffle Breakfast Sandwich and Sausage Pancake Bites were great starting points for delivering these flavor profiles. We want to help guests discover their love of combinations."

Although the sandwich sounds like a prelude to a heart attack, Associated Press writer Candice Choi points out the 360-calorie sandwich is less than the 390 calories packed into the turkey sausage sandwich the company recently introduced as a healthier option.
