Mohawk Road Apartment Fire Blows Out Windows

No injuries reported in apartment fire that closed area roads.

Sirens zipped through Whitefish Bay late Wednesday morning when reports of an apartment fire came into the North Shore Fire Department just before noon.

Battalion Chief Steve Brennan said the apartment at 5243 N. Mohawk Road in Glendale was being remodeled, so this was a flash fire that started with floor stripper. However, no one was injured since the contractors working on the apartment were outside taking a break.

Glendale police blocked off access to Mohawk Road at Lexington Boulevard and Richter Place until firefighters cleared the scene. Mohawk Road was reopened by 12:30 p.m.

Officials say the initial flames were more than 7-feet high and the apartment "was saved" because the the construction there was no furniture inside to fuel the fire.
