Meet Steven Shaw, New Math Support Teacher at Richards

Mr. Shaw has years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher and curriculum/learning specialist.

The Whitefish Bay School District hired 17 new teachers this year, and Whitefish Bay Patch hopes to introduce all of them to the community before the school year gets underway.

Today we'll introduce you to Steven Shaw, who will be a math support teacher at Richards Elementary School.

Where are you from? My hometown is Westby, Wisconsin which is located approximately 25 miles southeast of La Crosse, Wisconsin. I currently reside on Milwaukee's Eastside.

Educational background: I have a BS degree in architectural studies and MS degree in curriculum and instruction from UW-Milwaukee.  I have a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Education experience: I have worked as an elementary classroom teacher and curriculum/learning specialist for public schools in Milwaukee, St. Francis, Wisconsin, and Edmonds, Washington.  I have also been an adjunct faculty member at UW-Whitewater and UW-Milwaukee for their middle childhood-early adolescence teacher education programs.

Why did you choose Whitefish Bay? I do not have any past connections to Whitefish Bay, but I am pleased to be teaching in the School District of Whitefish Bay because the school district has a reputation for academic excellence and I have known parents who have told me their children had very positive experiences in the Whitefish Bay Schools.

Hobbies: I enjoy singing and belong to a small vocal ensemble affiliated with UW-Milwaukee called Vocal Tapestry that performs folk music from around the world.

Favorite place you've ever visited: I had the opportunity to visit the cities of Beijing and Shanghai in China for ten days which I found to be an intriguing and enlightening cultural experience.
