Sounds of Summer Headliners Announced

Whitefish Bay's big summer street festival will feature Something To Do, I'm Not a Pilot and Mike Mangione and the Union.

It's time to get those chairs and tables out from the garage, because Whitefish Bay's big summer street festival is just around the corner.

Sounds of Summer will be held on Aug. 17, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Silver Spring and Lake Drive, in front of Sendik's. Beer will be provided by Lakefront Brewery, and Sendik's will provide the food.

Sounds of Summer is put on by the Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation, which has recruited three big local names to entertain the crowd.

Opening the festival at 5:30 p.m. is Mike Mangione & The Union. This group combines a folk-rock sound with an orchestrated string section, soulful vocals and literate sensibility. The music is an eclectic mix of folk, gospel, blues and pop - described as melodic, delicate, dynamic and complex.

I'm Not A Pilot will play at 6:50 p.m. The Milwaukee indie rock band has become a local favorite over the last several years, and this summer they have played in prominent time slots at Summerfest, Brady Street Days and Summer Soulstice. Their sound is a blend of explosive drumrolls and crashes, sonic textures of piano and cello, warm vocal melodies and rich harmonies.

Milwaukee-based ska band Something To Do will play the top slot at 8:30 p.m. One of their songs, "When I'm Stuck I Turn To Duck Tape", has brought the group national attention, being mentioned on CNN headline news, NPR and in over 150 other media outlets. They’ve played Summerfest, the Skappleton music festival, the Ska is Dead tour, and over 300 other dates in the Midwest, Canada and the East Coast over the last eight years.
