Patch Picks: Spring Break Staycations

Having a memorable spring break shouldn’t mean you’re left broke. No need for airline tickets or luggage charges here. Rediscover what the area has to offer with these “staycation” suggestions.

 

  • Get hog wild at the Harley-Davidson Museum and The Iron Horse Hotel

Explore the exhibits dedicated to the history and culture of the motorcycle at the Harley-Davidson Museum at 400 W Canal St. in downtown Milwaukee.  Enjoy a quick bite at Café Racer or sit down for a meal and cocktails at Motor, the museum’s restaurant. To make a night of it, head to The Iron Horse Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel just up the road on 500 W. Florida St.

  • Make a splash at Paradise Landing Indoor Water Park

A weekend trip to an indoor water park may be just the thing to quell the itch for the beach while we wait for summer. Inside the Hilton Milwaukee City Center on 509 W. Wisconsin Ave., Paradise Landing Indoor WaterPark is complete with a lagoon and kiddie pool, plus water cannons, slides and fountains. There’s also the Family Fun Center, with video and table games and prizes. The waterpark is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, but will run everyday from April 17-24th.

  • Go green at Schlitz Audobon Nature Center

Appreciate the arrival of spring at Schlitz Audobon Nature Center on 1111 E. Brown Deer Rd. in Bayside.  Take in the view of the 165-acre nature reserve from its 60-foot observation tower, walk along the shores of Lake Michigan or hike the six miles of trails. The Center also has daily programs and workshops to participate in, plus a store to take a piece of adventure home with you.  Open 9am – 5pm daily, with $6 entry for adults and $4 entry for children.

 

  • See what's blooming at The Domes

Dreaming of jetting off to a desert or tropical paradise, but don’t want to shell out the cash? Just take the short drive to Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory on 524 S. Layton Blvd. “The Domes” house three climates, each with its own diverse plant life.  Get your palm tree fix in the tropical dome, with its lush greenery, vibrant flowers and fruits growing on the branch. Should dry heat be more your style, the desert dome has a variety of cacti, desert blooms and other plants that thrive in an arid atmosphere. The floral show dome presents flowers of a specific theme, which rotates throughout the year. Visit the website for information on hours and rates.

 

  • Get suite with your honey at Sybaris

For a romantic getaway not too far from home, check into Sybaris Pool Suites on 10240 N. Cedarburg Rd. in Mequon. Enjoy champagne and a soak in the hot tub by the glow of the fireplace in the Country Whirlpool Suite or go all out with the Chalet Swimming Pool Suite, which features a private pool, hot tub, steam room, waterfall, fireplace and massage chair, plus a lofted bedroom with a waterslide.
