Enjoying the Great Outdoors at Hubbard Park

While enjoying a great escape you do not always have to spend money. After checking this weekend's weather report, we decided to take our great escape outdoors and enjoy one of Shorewood's beautiful parks. 

Whether you enjoy taking a long walk, biking, or even jogging you will find a place for it at Hubbard Park, named after William James Hubbard, who used to be a Village Board President. 

The park occupies almost five acres of terraced, wooded terrain on the east bank of the Milwaukee River, according to Shorewood's website. It's almost like being in the country without leaving the city.

To gain access to the park you must go through a tunnel located underneath the Oak Leaf Recreation Trail. As you enter the park you will find your breath taken away at the beauty before you, you will feel as if you have entered  a secluded woods. 

While it may be an odd time of year to go to a park there are still many things you can enjoy from hiking, or  jogging, to just taking pictures of the changing season.

Nestled deep within the woods you will also find the Hubbard Park Lodge, a building, constructed as a WPA project by the FDR administration.

Located in a park setting along the winding Milwaukee River, the lodge and restaurant is considered one of the most romantic settings in Wisconsin, as couples have come to enjoy the private, secluded, rustic yet elegant facility with historic landmark status. The lodge includes a wood-burning fireplace, a cathedral ceiling and a veranda overlooking the Milwaukee River.

The Hubbard Park Lodge is open from 5-9pm each Friday. Live music starts at 6pm by the Brew Haus Polka Kings. Reservations are only taken for groups of 8 or more and must arrive before 5:30pm.During Lent no reservations are taken."

They also have a Sunday brunch, the Lumberjack brunch, which includes fresh fruit, an omelet bar, pancakes, bacon and sausage. Brunch is served on Sunday from 9am until 2 pm.

Shorewood's parks are all open daily from 5am until 10pm.

So, put on your running shoes, call your best friend and take a walk or jog over to Hubbard Park.  Enjoy the beautiful park nestled in the deep woods along the river.  You will feel as if you took a mini-vacation without stepping out of the city. Enjoy this weekend's Great Escape.
