Cryptosporidium Reported in Whitefish Bay

The source of the parasitic disease is not linked to drinking water.

Cryptosporidium has been reported in Whitefish Bay, Fox Point and Bayside, according to a letter from the North Shore Health Department.

Cryptosporidium is a parasitic disease that can cause loose, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and a slight fever. It can be spread by swallowing water or food contaminated by human feces, usually from tiny amounts that cannot be seen. It can also be spread from person to person, especially in homes or child care centers where diapers are changed regularly.

The North Shore Health Department has not identified the cryptosporidium source, but Health Officer Jamie Berg said the source is not drinking water.
