Summer: What to Do...For Teen or Tween Volunteering?

Looking for tween and teen community volunteer opportunities

With the end of the school year fast approaching, our family’s thoughts are turning to summer. As my son reminds me, it is summer break that is coming up, with the emphasis on the break. I wholeheartedly agree with him. Summer—for kids and adults—is a time to slow down the pace from that of the school year. But I have decreed that my tween cannot hang out around the house all summer. So, we have been talking about volunteer opportunities.

I have found teen volunteer opportunities in our community. Currently, the Whitefish Bay Recreation Department is seeking teen volunteers (individuals must be entering 9th grade or older to apply) for its playground programs at and parks. The Klode program has an especially inclusive component and offers opportunities to work with kids of all abilities.

A completed application (the application form is found in the Rec book available online at www.wfbschools.com under the community tab) and one letter of reference are due to the Recreation Department by Friday. An orientation and training program will follow on June 14, 2011, at Cahill Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Beginning in mid-July of this summer, the Miracle League of Milwaukee, an organization building an accessible baseball field and forming a league for children with special needs (you might have helped raise money for the field last summer by voting for the Brewers’ entry in the Pepsi Challenge), will be looking for buddies (aged 15 years or older) for pick-up baseball games at the new field under construction at the Cudahy YMCA in Brown Deer. Teens can volunteer by visiting the website: www.miracleleaguemilwaukee.org.

To date, I have not found any tween volunteer opportunities. If you have ideas for tween or other teen volunteer opportunities for the summer (single events or ongoing programs) in Whitefish Bay, the greater North Shore area, or Milwaukee, please comment. In the world of volunteering (and keeping tweens and teens active), every little bit helps!
