Anticipating the Fourth of July in Whitefish Bay

Looking forward to Fourth of July

My family lives near Klode Park, and the last week in June is one of anticipation. First, we receive the schedule of events in the mail. Next, we see the barricades dropped off near our street corner. Then, the tents are erected in the fields of Klode Park. Independence Day in the Bay is almost here!

I must confess that I anticipate the Fourth of July festivities as much as my kids do. I have always loved the Fourth of July. As corny as it may sound, there is patriotism in my heart. I still can’t believe that we live in a country that is a democracy, where we all (over the age of 18) can vote and have some say in the way that we want this country run.  It is a heady feeling for me . . . even now. How could our forefathers have had the vision and courage to move boldy toward this novel form of government in 1776? The bond with country hits home even more when, as is the case for me, an extended family member is serving in the military.

The other reason for excitement, of course, is anticipation of the day’s activities. What fun that we have the opportunity to celebrate the day in a small-town way—thanks to the Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation and volunteers. It is a kick to stand on the parade route and see folks whom we know lining the street and riding or walking in the parade. And if the kids are able to nab candy from the passing floats or marchers, all the better! We then head to the park for music, food, and games, which make for a full day of having fun and connecting with neighbors and friends in the Bay.   The fireworks are a glorious end to the Fourth. I wait all year to have the chance to “oh” and “ah” over those lights and sounds in the night sky. Every year it seems to get better. Perhaps it is because we have more spectacular fireworks every year. Perhaps it is because I appreciate all the more each year the community feeling that comes from being part of that patchwork of blankets with families, which stretches as far as the eye can see. Perhaps it is because I attend the fireworks each year with family, friends, and our kids, and have the opportunity to see it through their eyes.
