The Biggest Loser in the Obama/Romney Debate

Republicans are very happy with Mitt Romney's performance in the presidential debate last week. And the likely voters have rewarded him with a bump in the polls.

Democrats are disappointed that President Barack Obama did not go on the attack, and feel that he should have been more aggressive and taken Romney to task on many issues.

But the biggest loser in the debate was neither Romney nor Obama.

The Tea Party lost big time!

Instead of the Romney of the primaries, who served up plenty of strong hot tea — the Romney in the first presidential debate was serving lukewarm, watered-down tea.

We now know that Romney is going to keep much of Obamacare, ie. pre-existing conditions, and health coverage for everyone who needs it. We also know that Romney thinks that the banks and Wall Street need to be regulated.

Most importantly, Romney has proudly proclaimed that he knows how to work with both parties, and that as governor of Massachusetts; he compromised with the Democrats, in getting things done, ie. Romneycare.

So much for the Tea Party Republicans who have faithfully worked to block Obama on every issue possible, and who would not compromise on the tax or budget issues.

President Romney says he knows how to work with the Democrats and compromise with them, as he did in Massachusetts.

Grover Norquist may as well tear up all those no new tax pledges. Romney will need revenue from somewhere to make up for all the new tax deductions he is promising...right?

“He’s certainly being dishonest about his own record? When he says that he had the endorsement of the NRA, he did not. When he says he didn’t raise taxes, and in fact, there were $500 million in fees raised during this time. When he talks about my record or John McCain’s. “He’s making up stuff, it’s just incredible. In Arkansas, we call it DISHONESTY.”

P.S - Sound familiar with Romney’s very dishonest tactics -- 27 lies in 38 minutes -- speaking in the first debate with Obama! Yep, Romney lies a lot!

David T.,

Apparently you were not paying attention. Yes, increased revenues will be needed. The source of the revenues was addressed.

What are the two ways, David, that you can increase revenues in your business? One relates to price and the other to volume.

Think about it.

@Luke I am not the one saying that I can cut revenue and still pay for everything --- and NOT cut deeply into programs such as military, social security and Medicare.

That is what the Tea Party - Ryan and Romney are saying, or at least Romney was saying or agreeing with that, until the debate.

He kicked the Tea Party and that philosophy under the bus

Think about it :-)

David,

Right. You aren't saying that, and neither is Romney.

Once again, if you increase sales volumes enough in your business, you can reduce the rates you charge and still increase revenues. So it goes with taxes.

Think about it. Try to focus.

The Tea Party was never in love with Romney in the first place and didn't trust him. Hence, Paul Ryan in the number 2 spot. To the extent that they're losers, they've been losers since Romney was nominated.

The biggest losers that night were, in fact, Obama and all the lefties who thought he'd wipe the floor with Romney. He, and they, were totally caught off guard. Anytime you see one side woodshedding it for 24 hours following the event as they attempt to get their chops together (Romney lied!), you know who the true losers are.

@ Joe

"the Tea Party will be just fine" LOL

They are now irrelevant as a factor since Romney ditched them --- I will agree with all that Romney was definitely not the first choice of the Tea Party -- but at least he put on a show for a while and even selected Ryan as running mate --- but when the philosophy of the Tea Party stands in the way of his becoming president -- well he ain't letting them eat crackers in bed !

David: Wasn't it you who thought we needed a moderate a while back? Now that Romney is kickin' ass and takin' numbers, all you can do is attack the fact that he is not conservative enough for the Tea Party?
Seriously, Jimmy Carter is more conservative than the Bozo in the White House now. If given a choice between the two, I would take Carter in a heartbeat!

@Craig I still do prefer a moderate rather than the extremes of either party -- but I don't think that Romney even knows what he is, other than he wants to be president.

What I am afraid of is that "when you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there" --- and I don't think Romney has put any destination in his GPS other than become president

David: I think we both agree that hope for change doesn't work at all.
The divide of opinion has caused far left vs far right tactics, a decent moderate could be just what we need.
Romney has shown he CAN work across party lines, he has a decent track record.
My biggest fear is that it may be too late.

David-
I am not sure which presidential campaign and debate you are watching.

Throughout the primary we saw the Tea Party trying to prop up people other then Romney. It started with Bachmann, then Cain, then Perry, then Rick Santorum and now they are accepting Romney because (as Bob pointed out) he chose Ryan, but more importantly he is not Obama.

As for his debate performance. I can some that up in the following quote:

"My priority is jobs. And so what I do is I bring down the tax rates, lower deductions and exemptions — the same idea behind Bowles-Simpson, by the way. Get the rates down, lower deductions and exemptions to create more jobs, because there's nothing better for getting us to a balanced budget than having more people working, earning more money, paying — (chuckles) — more taxes. That's by far the most effective and efficient way to get this budget balanced."

He wants to lower the tax rates and close loopholes to bring the tax code closer to a flat tax. All because he understand the trickle down effect Reagan implemented that drove up the economy and government revenues in the 80's. Romney came out much more conservative then most who side with the Tea Party had expected.

@ JB What I saw was Romney pander to the Tea Party in the primaries and now is pandering to the middle to get elected as president.

I agree with you that the Tea Party never wanted him --- and obviously they were right in that initial assessment as far as getting someone who would follow their Agenda.

Isn't that standard operating procedure for any presidential candidate? They court the extremes during the primaries and then swing to the middle during the actual election...

The biggest losers in the debate .. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!! .. The Father of the Tea Party is the Blacklisted one, Dr. Ron Paul ... I see JB like most of the Media are afraid to mention his name ... I being a REAL Tea Party person could never vote for Romney, they way his people treated Ron Paul's delegates. So SHEEP keep voting for either of your oppressors .. It is great to be debt slave

The thing I like about Romney IS that he is clearly more moderate than extreme. If the GOP served me Santorum, I would vote for Obama.... given Romney, I'll take Romney. I do not like either the extreme right or the extreme left... each are problematic in their own ways. Extreme right is too against civil liberties... extreme left is too bleeding heart to run anything... the middle that will work with the common sense ideas and views from both sides is what I want... I will take a moderate... Democrat or Republican moderate doesnt matter much to me, though either appeals more against an opponent who is not a moderate. Obama clearly wants to make America more socialistic... I can't get behind that.

I should add the fact that Romney showcased his moderate tendencies in the debate changed me from voting AGAINST Obama into voting FOR Romney. Instead of the lesser of two evils, I came away agreeing with Romney far more and he even addressed some of the concerns I had in policies of his I previously didnt like from the very high level view I had been given of them. An opt in voucher thing for medicare doesnt bother me, where getting rid of it or forcing it to be vouchers for everyone does, for example

I'm pretty politically apathetic and haven't voted in years. Only saw the debate because my lady friend made me watch it. My objective opinion as someone who really and truly doesn't give a crap and even if I did am so cynical that I'd find a reason to avoid caring too much, it appeared to me that Obama has no idea what he's talking about, much less doing. It also appeared the other guy knows his stuff and is probably a whole hell of a lot more qualified for the job, and more importantly, up to the task.
