Ready, Set, Read!
I've arrived at my friend Laura's - the coffee is brewed, there are blankets and pillows aplenty and the cats have sniffed over my bags and shoes. I have a stack of books set aside and there is beautiful instrumental music playing in the background. As I type, Laura is on the couch reading a book about the Thames River in England and I'm looking longingly at the overstuffed red La-Z-Boy chair that's waiting for me to curl up and crack open the first book on the pile.
Speaking of the first book, I'm beginning by continuing my reading of Diana Gabaldon's "Voyager." I'm sure I'll need a break from it at some point during the day and afternoon, so I have others at the ready. I'll also be checking in periodically here to update and blog about my second-ever read-a-thon. (And because Laura has a Mac book and it's just fun to type on - I like the way the keys click and clack as I type. I'm a nerd, I know. Don't act so surprised!)
A quick side note before I take my leave to begin: over 30 responses to my political post the other day! I'm blown away. I want to say a general thank you for the comments and opinions, all of which have thus far been very respectfully given and I am very thankful for that. I will be reviewing more of the comments tomorrow and respond. I just wanted to say thanks for the comments, thanks for reading and Happy Saturday!

Great weekend to stay inside and read. I just finished 11/22/63, by King and now I started Fraziers, Thirteen Moons.

I wish I could have sat and read this weekend - it's still so dreary out. I read 11/22/63 last year. I don't normally like King's books, but I did like that one. What did you think?

I liked it. It was very thought provoking and it kept me guessing the possible endings. It had plenty of King's styling, he is a great story teller. The book could have been a bit shorter, but it did end correctly. 4 3/4 stars.

I agree. I was a bit worn out about 3/4 through the book, but then it picked up again and had a good ending.

No time to read yet as we still have a lot of yard work to do. Yesterday a friend gave me another book to read called Yugoslav Story by John Phillips. It is an old book telling the story of Tito. I will add this to my pile of books which I am reading trying to understand the civil war and atrocities that took place in Europe during and after WWII.

@Randy1949: Well, for the read-a-thon this past Saturday, I brought a few books with me:
"Voyager" by Diana Gabaldon
"Old World Murder" by Kathleen Ernst
"A Different Kind of Normal" by Cathy Lamb
"Thirteenth Child" by Patricia C. Wrede
But I actually ended up only reading "Voyager." :) I've since finished and am now reading "Old World Murder."

@Jenna -- I like science fiction and fantasy, and i have friends who are fans of the HBO series (which I haven't seen).We'll see if I like this series.
Previously, I'd worked my way through Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I must have read over twenty of them. But too much Pratchett gets to be too much. LOL

I admire your enthusiasm for reading, but why all of the cramming with no sleep? Seems to be a stressful way to read unless I am missing something here.

Well, it can be stressful if you put pressure on yourself. I look at it as just a fun day of dedicated reading time when I refuse to make any excuses for not sitting with a book in hand. :)

Reading is supposed to be fun, not stressful. I do all my reading in bed, either before falling asleep or while drinking coffee in the morning before getting up. One of the perks of retirement.
There are some authors who will keep me going all night, though. Stephen King is one of them.

Many times I read much later than I should. My dog comes over, with sad and sleepy eyes, to remind me it's bed time. I can't wait to get my new Kindle Paperwhite, it is back lit and will allow me to read even longer. I really like the Kindle product and I just saw something that said that the books were getting cheaper.
