We Humans of Earth are at the Verge (a point beyond which something else begins) were a decision could mean how humanity might live or not live based on how those in power decide. In a way it is quite simple, to trust in the worlds greatest scientist or trust a group of people who make an absolutely unbelievable amount of money keeping up what, for them, is business a usual, like burning up the last of the earths fossil fuels so they can become richer. We have a President, like him or not, who is empowered by the nature of the presidency to make the hard decisions that will, at this point in history, effect civilization as we know it for the rest of the perceivable future.
The Republican Party is touting how The Keystone Pipeline will be Americas salvation to give us the cheap gas that we so crave and also the boost to our flagging economy that all of America is crying out to our leaders for.
So, I guess this Pipeline is the new magic, latest and greatest thing that will supply Americans with oodles of new jobs that only will happen if we can get this Pipeline built and under way. Well, it will not be the Messiah of job creation that they are praising and shouting from their ivory tower roof tops. Most of the oil from this pipeline will be exported to China, and at best will create only about 5,000 to 6,000 new jobs, but that is only for it's construction after that far, far less so.
Tar sands are bound up in a viscous gooey sand. It has to be cooked or steamed out which is highly energy intensive. This enables it to be piped out across the American heartland over hill and dale rivers and streams for about 1,500 miles. The Pipeline will cross over our great rivers such as the Yellowstone and over one of our greatest Aquifers, the Ogallala. Pipe lines leak. Plus, they are built by company's that produce the lowest, cheapest bid. That alone should scare the hell out of you. My last thought, and this is by NASA Climatologist Dr. James Hanson who said:
"If this Pipeline goes through, it is essentially game over for our climate to be anywhere near a normal we grew up with and we have not evolved as a species to handle such a radically different climate."
Since this is my first blog for patch as well as my first Cartoon on it, please comment. I would greatly like the feedback
Check out this link and you will see what a horrible idea this Pipeline is.

How would a pipeline necessarily affect the climate?
Either we build the pipeline, or someone else will, right?
I don't think the pipeline is quite the end of the world scenario as you're painting it to be! You do realize that there are already pipelines all across our great land, don't you?

You may want to go to a site called "Climate Progress " You will find there more Knowledeable people than my self some of our Worlds top scientists do a much better job than me on explaing why this is a bad idea ,plus burning fossil fuel has already brought on Climate change in a way that will not be suitable to Humans in the coming years . You may fall into the camp that thinks this is just the Earth going through a natural cyclical change but you would be wrong ,yes the earth can do that it's just that this time we Humans collectivley are the Volcano, the Astroid . Well just give that web site a look it will be better than me I ,so just give it a go. Also might add Pipe lines ,oilrigs, Ships carring oil are all over the news leaking poison all over the earths oceans ,rivers ect.

wut....
so you can't explain in your own words how a pipeline will effect the climate. Didn't get to that chapter yet?

You are aware that crude oil leaks into the Oceans naturally without humans having anything to do with it?
Environmentalists should be screaming for us to drill everywhere we can to get rid of that sticky messy stuff.

I strongly suggest you look to The site I keep mentioning to Every one who views my Cartoon and that is" Climate Progress" It is all written out there how everything we do has repercussions to the Planet We are consumers after all . I did read all the chapters,That is why I am doing my thing just to create this conversation but if you want more information then again try that site I mentioned but it's up to you to read it .

@ james. Even the slightest risk that this could leak is a no no for me. We have seen how greed creates havoc on our environment. No need to look no further than our own Lake Michigan. We can't eat fish anymore from there due to the coal plants spewing Mercury. We empty raw sewerage in it making it undrinkable. Eventually as a society we will pollute verything and it will be too late to recover. What we need is alternatives to oil period. We need to expand technology to hydrogen processing, etc. I would bet that our govt. does not want this now. How much tax money is collected at the pumps daily? If we are going to dig, then dig for ourselves, store it and bring the supply way up over demand to drive prices down for us. That won't happen and in the meantime forget the pipeline ruining the countryside.

Well said; and thank you for lending your voice that is all I am trying to do in my small way ever since I read a book called "The last Days of Ancient Sunshine" by Thom Heartman. life changing ,but you may be right it is getting a bit late , I just have to quote a very great contempory scientist James Lovelock "Gaia Theory" when asked about climate change and what he would give as pertinent advice to young people he replied "I would just tell them to enjoy themselves right now this is the best your going to get"

Mike. The water I drink comes from Lake Michigan. I caught salmon on it just a few months ago, hey look Michael's avatar is of him fishing, how fitting.
There is 25,000 miles of existing pipe line on the Ogallala Aquifer, which is if you knew anything about how an aquifer works is protected by layers of natural formations. Do you know what you are talking about or are we in the bubble?

Remember the claims about the pipeline in Alaska? They claimed devastation would occur, and wildlife would die because of the pipeline. Then as it turns out, the wildlife used the pipeline for shade...LOL

They also use it for transportation as it is a clear area to walk. It is also used as a sanctuary from freezing to death as the oil is warm to flow through.

Mike, I am sympathetic to your worries, but this is over the top. As Hoffa points out, we already have lots of oil pipelines here and all over the world. One more will not bring on the 'Apocalypse'. The only real concern with Keystone was that it would cross over the main water aquifer for Nebraska and surrounding areas. That is why the governor of Nebraska opposed it.
Yes shale oil is dirty, but not much worse than oil in general.
Another point is that pipeline leaks are not like the BP spill in the Gulf. The pipeline is monitored and leaks are quickly found and repaired before much oil escapes.
As long as everyone is depending on oil for so much of our welfare we have to keep finding new sources for it. Your efforts would be better spent encouraging renewable energies.
As for your art - why are there eel-like things in the oil?

I was kind of thinking of Fossil fuel being dinosaurs at one time ,now turned to a syrupy black goop but on escaping their undergroud graves having another go at carnivorous mayhem. I read a blog called Climate progress which will give you much smarter people than myself on these issues, The top scientists in this country think this pipeline is a pretty big nail in the coffin for Climate Change. So that is were I glean my Information from. Thank you for sharing your voice, its all in the dialogue we share.

Your other option besides using a pipeline, since well the world won't stop burning oil is to truck and rail it. So we are burning diesel fuel to transport crude. I don't see how this is more environmentally friendly.
Top scientists say burning all those proven reserves would release enough CO2 to warm the climate by only one 20th of a degree Celsius.
I suggest you check what you read as question it from time to time.

Caught up in your own exaggerations much? You so blatantly picked out little bits of slander and falsehoods its easy to see how so many uninformed will buy into this nonsense.
You failed to mention that Obama was asked by Billionaire Buffet to stop the pipeline because he had bought up all the rail lines and train systems that will be shipping the oil at far greater environmental risk and energy expense. But since he's a Democratic operative you and most of the media choose to ignore these facts, what hypocracy! Your all about the environment and trashing conservatives who want to make a living but fall sadly silent when it's one of your own profiteering and damaging the environment while reaping billions.
You also failed to mention that while some of the oil might be sold to the Chinese from the pipeline, all of it will be sold to the Chines without it. And no Americans will get jobs from the Canadian alternative. The oils is still going to flow, the question is will we get some of it and some of the jobs, or none of it and none of the jobs?

I look to Climate progress for my information ,If you look it up i think it will give you better answers than I ever could ,I will say this the only people making money from this is the Large Oil corporations that make Astronomical profits from it and the people on the clean up crews that have to deal with the collateral damage when all these Pipelines leak all over the place and poison lakes and streams ,hills and dales and what not . you are just going to have to decide on what kind of world you want to end up with or for that matter leave to our decendents .

You failed to mention the 150 years worth of oil in the North Dakotas alone, not to mention in the Canadian fields or the vast reserves of natural gas we have, clean energy we can easily convert to but that does not play well for the fear mongering Democrats.
Nor do Democrats seem to remember the effects of innovation and technical progress that has consistently neutralized end of world fears.
You fail to acknowledge that doomsayers and the supposedly wise science and environmental community have predicted the end of mankind for the last 100 years, yet mankind constantly saves itself through invention and creative thinking that liberals like to ignore or pretend does not happen. We so easily forget for example how absolutely positive scientists were in the 60s that by the 80s the world would end, or the 70s when they were so sure we would run out of fuel and water in the next decade, oh and then the ice age that never happened either. Now they just stop talking about the fact that the world has plenty of fuel to last us centuries, plenty of time to invent better and cleaner alternatives.
You fail to mention that our air is vastly cleaner than it has been in decades, that are water ways are far cleaner too. Did you forget how acid rain was supposed to be burning everything up, eating all our cars, destroying all our buildings and everything else by the late 90s?
Whoops I guess the experts you cite are also experts at forgetting how consistently wrong they are.

Did you look up any of the Experts I cited , that was my suggesstion ,look1 just look at a site called Climate progress , a lot of the things you say are not happening Are I am afraid . There are seven billion humans burning the heck out of Fossil fuels many are not that safe to exract ,I doubt you would be happy if they were Fracking natural gas by you ,look up what it does ,but better yet do a little research besides Fox news.
Steve
9:23 pm on Thursday, March 1, 2012
Ugh....
We can say the same about your sources since they well made up to this point and last I checked Fox does little real reporting on drilling.
We don't drink water that is thousands of feet where natural gas resides so why would fracking it be unsafe?
Basic geology prevents such contamination from starting below ground. Your normal well is about 800 feet.
I know this is probably not sinking in but I figured I would try as I feel lying about energy, mining and drilling is common.

►The Republican Party is touting how The Keystone Pipeline will be Americas salvation to give us the cheap gas that we so crave◄
What are you talking about, actually your entire "piece" is just bits of uneducated fears. Oil is traded on a world market as a commodity. I never herd anyone say a pipeline, of whos' oil we wouldn't use much of anyway, would lower the gas price.
I'm sorry for you it's ONLY 6000 jobs. Tell that to those contractors looking for work or the ones that already purchased millions of dollars of equipment for this project.
Teacher, please learn yourself first before writing about something you have no real world knowledge of.

Try reading "Climate Progress" something that is written by authentic scientists with no real vested interest in the $$$$$ that oil brings to just a few ,I am not going to spend days typing out facts that are readibly available on the site mentioned . As for Fracking to you ever look up information that is clearly not written by Big oil disinformation people / There are all kinds of poeple who lost drinking water due to underground well contamination in Montana and Texas . look I no I did not footnote what I am mentioning because it is discussed daily on the above mentioned site . So I am going back to the old drawing board to do my more visual thing . But Steve Thank you for writing I have to say just getting those first comments is pretty cool ,I did check out your site and will keep and open mind with your beliefs so take care .

800,000 people did not sign a petition in 24 hours. Maybe 800,000 spam e mails were replied to but there was certainly no signatures. 300,000,000 people would have some clout, 800,000 is nothing. We have 800,000 brain dead people in this Country.

Last night President Clinton came out in favor of the pipeline and according to CNBC, CLinton has asked his wife to set up a meeting with President Obama to discuss it. Further, CNBC said this was the plan all along, that just when President Obama needs it during the election that he will come out and endorse it, then being able to claim all the jobs and a win over democrats while also having Clinton's endorsement so that people who still like Clinton but are on the fence with Obama will be a little more inclined to vote for him.
Earlier in the week the Secretary of the Dept. of Energy in the same speech to congress said they were driving up prices on purpose, and will also drive them back down just before the election. Then back up to European levels or higher after Obama is reelected.
The whole pipeline discussion is pointless, Warren Buffett has had time to buy up more stocks on the construction companies and pipe manufactures, stocks whose price dropped after the Obama administration stopped the pipeline. Buffet had already bought up much of the rail, rail construction, and train companies who will ship much of the oil if the pipeline does not go through and also to handle the rail parts in Canada.
The whole pipeline thing seems to me to be political theater that most people won't look closely enough at to see the real things going on in the back ground. And of coarse to ensure that the operatives and donors are well rewarded along the way.
