665 Animals Die at Milwaukee Animal Control in September 2012

Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control (MADACC) has killed 4,138 animals this year through September 30, 2012. (This does not include those that died in their kennel, were dead on arrival, or were owner-requested euthanasia).

Six birds, 2,699 cats, 1,383 dogs, and 50 other animals died at MADACC.  The charts below show comparisons from last year to this year and also the breakdown of the September statistics.  As you can see, in September alone, MADACC killed 665 animals.

Since MADACC is funded entirely by tax payer money they should be transparent in their operations. These figures SHOULD be posted on their website in a timely manner after they are approved at a board meeting. But they are not. They figures were obtained by making an Open Records Request to the interim director of MADACC.

Six birds, 2699 cats, 1383 dogs, and 50 other animals died at MADACC.  The charts attached  show comparisons from last year to this year and also the breakdown of the September statistics.

Some improvement has been shown over last September but other cities in America are doing much better while Milwaukee is lagging behind.  Cities such as Reno, Austin, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Salt Lake City and Kansas City, Missouri are improving their animal control programs and saving lives.

The key to solving the problem is knowing that there is a problem. If you did not know that MADACC had such a high death rate for animals in Milwaukee County please share this blog post with your friends and neighbors.   If you are a resident of Milwaukee County please contact your local alderman to express your displeasure. Milwaukee County animal control is funded by your tax dollars.

So shamefu to kill all those animals when there are alternativesl! At least near Chicago we have PAWS--a wonderful no-kill organization.

The amount of healthy animals being killed, poor level of care being given, animals becoming ill in stagnant air with inadequate ventilation. Oustide kennels not being used to their $35K of donated money from concerned WI residents..( $10K donated by MPD ) It is a trainwreck. It is your government's way of caring for the animals of 19 participating municipalities. They hired an E.D for less than a year, and fired him to bring back the midieval ways of killing every animal on it's eighth day. They are firing long term volunteers. Kicking out rescues that take the dogs they'd rather euthanize. BSL Breed descrimination is rampant. It is run by Board Members: Mayors of your towns. And they are promoting all of the underhanded, cold blooded actions of acting Jon MacDowell A/C officer and acting E.D, and taking an abnormally high euthanasia list by their Vet. Who doesn't seem to like any dogs marked for death escape that fate. What is going on there. Mayor Barrett and all elected officials need their eyes on that place. Keep them open.

Why aren't these figures on their website, what can be done to make these numbers more visible to the public? It's so sad that the kennels which were built to enrich the lives of the animals there are not being used, but are instead locked. It seems a shame that a facility would prefer to kill animals that have interest from rescues. This needs to be changed, questions need to be asked, and Jon MacDowell needs to answer for his actions.

Such a shame - animals represent pure love.

Then put up all this money you claim to have to end it. Make your little farmette a homage to all these creatures. Make good on your big talk.

@$$andNonsense -

For your information, Hoffa already donates plenty of his money and time working with several local Humane Societies.

@Taoist Know-Nothing -

As Temple Grandin famously said, "nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." As long as we're humane in our raising and slaughtering of stock (note how Hoffa said stock and not all animals), Hoffa believes it perfectly ok to consume most meat products.

Huffa,

I don't see any rationale for the distinction that you're making. Then again, I long ago stopped expecting logical consistency from you. You and the rest of the "animal lovers" on this board can just keep passing around pictures of cute puppies and passing judgement on those us who take a more, ahem, -utilitarian- view of animal life, while you scarf down chicken nuggets and triple cheeseburgers. Baby cows look just as cute as puppies, just FYI - and dogs and cats probably taste as good as pigs and chickens, if you dish them up right.

Like I've said before, I'm sure Kathy Pobloskie is a vegan, because otherwise all of this drum beating about ANIMAL DEATHS (OMG!) would be the height of oblivious sanctimony.

@Taoist -

If you can't seem to comprehend what Hoffa said, then it isn't worth explaining it to you further!

I've thought there was something shady going on there for quite some time. In Chicago the CACC is just as bad.

Don't forget to blame the irresponsible pet owners to be credited for filling the shelter.

I drove past the intersection of highways 11 and 31 this weekend and saw a hawker next to the road holding a placard encouraging drivers to buy puppies for sale at a big-box pet store. This only feeds the problem by encouraging knee jerk considerations for the purchase of a pet.

We thus need to encourage prospective pet owners regarding the huge responsibilities and commitments and costs relating to pet ownership.

We also need to encourage prospective responsible pet owners to adopt from shelters instead of buying pets from pet stores.

Finally, why not mandate that all dog/cat purchases, sans by licensed breeders or properly-vetted prospective owners, require the spay/neuter of every animal sold?

Heartbreaking to learn this. Definitely going to investigate further into this.
