Whitefish Bay Teachers Union Votes to Recertify
Ninety-four percent of members voted to recertify the union, and WBEA President Mark Yanisch said he hopes to work cooperatively with district administration and the School Board in the future.
The Whitefish Bay teachers union, like most other teacher unions in the Milwaukee area, voted to recertify and keep its union status.
The recertification was necessary as a result of the new collective-bargaining law, which requires unions vote to recertify every year. The move allows the union to continue negotiating wages. Teachers and many others in public unions are restricted from bargaining for anything else under the changes passed in Act 10.
Ninety-four percent of Whitefish Bay Education Association members voted to recertify. In a written statement, WBEA President Mark Yanisch said the union has a good working relationship with the Whitefish Bay School Board and the district's administration, and he said he believes the parties can move forward in a constructive way to address budget challenges and other challenges in public education.
Additionally, Yanisch added the union recertification sends a message to Gov. Scott Walker and his Republican colleagues in the State Legislature.
"This outcome also sends a political message to Madison that we are united in standing against the current political forces that are working against public education, and many of our members will continue to be active in the political process to produce a positive change," he said. "We are committed to being a strong voice for our profession, schools and students.
"Governor Walker and the legislature need to understand that you cannot cut $1.6 billion from public schools and not hurt students. We understand that next year’s challenges will be greater than the present, and want to restore the state’s commitment to maintaining Wisconsin’s educational successes. Our students and families deserve nothing less."
Across the state, 177 of 206 education groups in the state voted to recertify, according to the Wisconsin Employee Relations Commission, which oversaw the voting over the last 20 days.

What the teachers union must understand is it is no longer business as usual. The real world is here and they better get used to it. Education is not cut, their outlandish salaries and benefits have finally hit a brick wall. The union does not care about students, just their own greed and selfishness is on display here.

I don't see what you see here.
"the union has a good working relationship with the Whitefish Bay School Board and the district's administration, and he said he believes the parties can move forward in a constructive way to address budget challenges and other challenges in public education."
This sounds like the teachers took the cuts in benefits without whining, and just want to pick their cuts in the future, rather than having them thrust upon them by others. Of course they are working to fight cuts in public education--there are costs in educating every kid that private schools don't experience. And they hope to maintain what they have, just like everyone else.
I hope that my local Board is paying attention here--teachers are not the greedy selfish pigs that these comment boards accuse them of being. My relatives who are teachers work hard, and if they had comp time, would still have their summers without kids.

Just as long as they're "active in the political process" on their own time - not taking time away from their jobs to run off to Madison to protest - and their political bent doesn't find it's way into the coursework. Of course, if this is really about making sure the kids get a good education (versus being reluctant to share the burden of a slumping economy), those concerns shouldn't even crop up.

Did Whitefish Bay cancel classes last spring?

Did any WFB teachers take a sick day to show up in Madison for the protests?

I congratulate the Whitefish Bay School Board and the Teacher's Union for maintaining their dialogue and working relationship that can only continue to improve education in our school system. The adversarial system that some local school districts have adopted with their teachers does not serve the best interests of children. A system in which the teachers have a voice can only help the school district attract good new teachers and retain the ones they have.

Dick Marx - Very true... both sides need to compromise and that doesn't happen without conversation.
