Whitefish Bay Will Join UN Anniversary Celebrations
Village President Julie Siegel and the Boy Scout Troop 400 Honor Guard will raise the American and United Nations flags at Village Hall Sunday.
Whitefish Bay will join the United Nations' 67th anniversary celebration next week.
The Greater Milwaukee Chapter of the United Nations Association-USA is co-sponsoring the following events:
Sunday, 12 p.m.: Village President Julie Siegel will welcome the Boy Scout Troop 400 Honor Guard who will raise the American and United Nations flags at Village Hall. Celebrating the United Nations Anniversary in Whitefish Bay has been an annual event since 2006, along with raising the UN flags at schools and other public venues.
Immediately following will be a reception in the Village Hall with refreshments and a program by Whitefish Bay High School students speaking about their experiences at the Model United Nations Assembly, followed by a Q&A period. The Wisconsin Model UN is held every year in March by the Institute of World Affairs at UW-M. The students are: Courtney Richards, Morgan Phillips, Daniel Gaenslen, Rose Misey and their MUN advisor, Pam Routhier, of the WFBHS faculty.
Tuesday: Ellen Laipson, President of the Stimson Center in Washington D.C., will keynote the Rotary Club of Milwaukee's UN Anniversary luncheon. Laipson will speak at the UW-M Library Conference Center, 2311 E Hartford Ave., from 7:00-8:30.
Wednesday: Whitefish Bay High School students will sign a gigantic birthday banner from 6:45 to 7:00 a.m. as the UN Flag flies over their school on the actual United Nations Day celebrated by the 193 member countries of the UN. Ms. Terry Copeland, WFBHS faculty hosts the event.
At 8:30 a.m., Don Richards, Chairman of the Mayor's Committee on the United Nations, will conduct the UN Flag raising on Zeidler Plaza, 814 N Broadway. Mayor Tom Barrett will speak at a reception following in the Rotunda of the Milwaukee City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., Keynote speaker will be Ms. Ellen Laipson, President of the Stimson Center, Washington, D. C., followed by Alderman Nic Kovac and Dr. Gary Shellman, President of the Greater Milwaukee UNA-USA chapter
