A 22-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges after he allegedly passed a bad check at a Whitefish Bay jewelry store so he could sell the items to buy drugs.

David A. Robertson was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Monday with one count of issuing a worthless check. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Nov. 7, Robertson went to Thiet Jewelers, 513 E. Silver Spring Drive, and purchased $300 worth of items with a check. The check was drawn from a closed bank account and was later returned.

Robertson told police he knew the check was bad, but bought the items “for scrap” so he could get money to buy cigarettes and drugs.

Robertson is currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail while awaiting trial.
