POLL: Are You Happy With Summerfest Headliners?

Beach Boys were just announced as the fourth headliner for the 10-day concert event, joining Neil Diamond, Lady Antebellum and the Zac Brown Band.

California harmony pioneers The Beach Boys were announced this week as the Marcus Amphitheater headliner on July 1 at Summerfest, Milwaukee's major music festival.

They are releasing a new original studio album this year and touring with all the original surviving members, but are 24 years removed from being inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

Another older headliner is 71-year-old Neil Diamond, who was just inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame last year. They join two country music standouts, the Zac Brown Band and Lady Antebellum, as the headliners announced so far. Lady Antebellum won the 2012 Grammy for Country Album of the Year.

What do you think of the headliners so far? Too old? Too country? Smart marketing choices? Exactly the right fit for Milwaukee?

And who is missing? There are six nights still to be announced. Tell us in the comments which bands you believe should headline the World's Largest Music Festival.

So far, they're terrible. Of course, the Beach Boys are great, but this ain't 1966.

Bummerfest has lost its appeal for me, and has for the past 10 years. It was much more fun back in the day when it wasn't so controlled and there were more bands and music to chose from, too expensive, bad beer bad music and far too many FIBS.

Who would you want to see? It's tough for me to pick current bands that I'd pay for, but you gotta get Foo Fighters.

After seeing the Beach Boys on the Grammys I'd rather watch a funeral.

Had their set gone on much longer, you might have.

I love zac brown and lady ant! I think summerfest still does a nice job. You have to remember its not the 80's anymore.

The Beach Boys? They sound awful these days. Maybe they should just get up their and smile while pumping an old album of theirs over the loudspeaker.

None of the above. Agree with the comment about Foo Fighters!

Yawn. I agree with Foo Fighters too. How about Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, and other up and coming bands instead of the standard outdated bands. There is a lot of great music out there--just watch the Pabst/Riverside/turner Hall listings.

Why isn't there a "none of the above" on this poll?! That's my vote!

I agree with Mark. I have no desire to see any of these groups. Hopefully some of the smaller shows will be better.

Obviously, it's impossible to please everyone but I think over the years, Summerfest has done a pretty decent job in booking talent that appeals to the masses. Personally, I think the Beach Boys are a bad choice this year though. I think they would be better suited for the State Fair. On the other hand, I think Neil Diamond is a great pull. I don't have much interest in seeing him myself, but I think the Summerfest crew landed a bit hit there. Let's wait and see how they fill out the rest of the Amphitheater headliners. They've not even booked half the bands yet.

I wouldn't pay to see any of the above either. If we want to see old bands, how about the reunited Van Halen ... at least they can still play and rock! Generally the side stage bands are better than main stage these days, but even then it's not worth the hassle to overpay for beer that you end up spilling while trying to get through the mob of people walking from nothing to nothing.

I'm with Pammy - in the past 20 years I have been to Marcus 3, maybe 4 times. I really enjoy walking around and taking in some of the side stages. My youth was spent at the Miller Jazz Oasis and I can't tell you how many great musicians I had the pleasure of listening to.

I saw Peter Gabriel last year and it sucked only for the fact that he was playing with the New Blood Orchestra and through almost every song you could clearly hear Hall & Oats from one of the stages that was clearly positioned too close to the Marcus.

So now the latest headliner is Iron Maiden, with Alice Cooper. That still feels really old to me — at least for a Marcus headliner. Three of the five performers so far started between 1950 and 1975, and the other two were formed in 2002 and 2006. So maybe the fact that I graduated high school in 1986 is why I look at the lineup and say "bleah!"

I've been going to Summerfest for almost 20 years and I say this with confidence: Worst....line up......ever. Even the outlying stages are horrible. Will not be going this year (for the first time). Here's hoping for a better 2013!

I emailed my wife the list of outlying stage headliners with the note: "Not one. Not a single one." I agree that it's really disappointing so far. Hopefully they're still working on a big-name Marcus headliner.

I dunno that the "Grounds Stage Headliners" are all duds. I wouldn't put Common, Robyn or Fitz and the Tantrums into the "dud" category. Of the oldies, Steve Miller still puts on a pretty good show. I'm unfamiliar with most of the rest of them, but there's at least 3 out of the 4 that I mentioned that might be worth a trip down from my POV.
